Sculpture in Y4

As we build towards the outcome for our Year 4 Summer Term topic of 'Why were the Romans powerful?' we have been looking at the art form of sculpture this week and how it is often used to commemorate powerful people.

We have looked at existing sculptures and analysed how artists have used different techniques and features to portray power. We then looked at some existing sculptures of powerful people from Ancient Rome, these included statues of emperors, gladiators and even an opponent of the Romans, Boudicca.

Pupils design their own busts in their sketch books before making them using clay. We have had some really impressive representations of different powerful people and the pupils really thought about aspects of their sculpting such as facial features and expressions to convey the power their figure held.
